In the beginning cities just sort of happened, naturally. Or did they? Archaeological evidence gives credence both to ancient cities arising fromrnthe accumulated decisions of many individuals and from the plans of citizens or rulers. If cities are emergent, the collective unconscious collaboration of thousands of actors focused only on their own needs, what's the point of trying to plan them? If cities need to be designed, why do the results often turn out so badly?
