The Role of London's 'Food Quarters'

The title of Susan Parham's book - Market Place - should be taken literally: the book deals with places in the city, understood as physical environments, but not disconnected from social uses and cultural meanings, whose redevelopment was triggered, and whose current function is identified, by the presence of a food market. Parham proposes to call these food-led regeneration areas 'food quarters', as the subtitle of the book reveals. The main thesis of the book is that food quarters enable urban planners to design convivial food spaces that contribute to sustainable cities. In fact, much of the book assesses whether and how planners have either supported, or obstructed, the development of food quarters, and Parham generally concludes the latter (p. 61).
