Buildings mark a distribution of skills and power across the urban tissue. A university, a hospital, a courthouse, a church are physical denotations of the activities that take place within them. These different buildings are designed, and can be regularly modified, to support teaching and research, patient care and rehabilitation, administration of justice, worship and community building. These same walls also regulate and constrain the range of permitted discourses. What can be said and done in a church or a university might not be appropriate elsewhere. Who is entitled to pronounce a sentence or to prescribe a medical treatment performs his or her duties within the boundaries of designated buildings, where actions are made public.
