Building Modern Turkey: State, Space and Ideology in the Early Republic

In Building Modern Turkey, Zeynep Kezer analyses how space at various scales has been utilized to build modern Turkey. The book consists of three parts and six chapters with a brief introduction. It opens with an overview of: the political and economic weakening of the Ottoman Empire; the early modernization attempts aimed at reaching the development levels of industrialized Western countries; and the conditions that led the Empire to participate in the First World War. This provides a focus for the substance of the book, and is supported with materials from the 1937 exhibition History of the Early Republic to illustrate both the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic and the central dilemmas that she exposes.
