ENERGY STAR Certification Comes to Multifamily Buildings

The popular ENERGY STAR certification system has been customized for multifamilv build- ings. With current estimates showing that multifamily properties could become 30% more efficient by 2020 and energy costs for renters increasing 20% over the past decade, the certification system will allow building managers to showcase sustainable practices while reducing energy costs for renters. Additionally, the certification system will be integrated with other green building programs including LEED. A report from Fannie Mae and the EPA, Transforming Multifamily Housing: Fannie Mae's Green Initiative and Energy Star for Multifamily provides insight into the ENERGY STAR rating system for multifamily properties. With scores ranging from 1-100 and representing a building's percentile ranking compared to similar buildings, any building scoring above a 75 is eligible to apply for ENERGY STAR certification.
