Los Angeles reigns as the city with the most ENERGY STAR-certified buildings, according to a new list compiled by the EPA. The city, which boasts 443 certified facilities, has held this position since the list's inception in 2008. Washington, D.C. trails in second place for the fifth consecutive year with 435 ENERGY STAR-certified buildings. Commercial buildings that have earned the certification are verified to perform in the top 25% of similar buildings nationwide. According to the EPA, on average these buildings use 35% less energy and emit 35% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than non-certified facilities. ENERGY STAR certification is awarded based on a single year of actual, measured energy performance and is valid for one year.
