Transporting electricity through power lines to remote customers is often inefficient and expensive. Researchers at the University of Missouri have found that creating a grid with small bioenergy plants could be beneficial to rural areas. "Farmers already have access to a large amount of biomass material left over each year after harvests," says Tom Johnson, professor and author of the study. "If they had access to small biomass power plants, they could become close to self-sustaining in terms of power."
