HARD TIMES

At the time of writing, the Royal Society for Arts was planning a debate on the question: "What kind of economy and society will emerge from the new age of austerity?" Well, a fairly pessimistic answer is likely to come from any of the 71,000 people who have lost their jobs in construction over the past 12 months (page 9). In our attempt to answer the question, and as part of our special issue on austerity this week, we talked to some of those still working in the industry.
