A year ago, the world was Vince Reed's oyster. As a 33-year-old QS with solid UK experience he was in demand. In fact, at that time he had three job offers to chose from, all worth at least £55,000 a year plus benefits. Today he is unemployed and reckons his best option is to hunt for work in the Middle East. But despite registering with about 60 recruitment agencies and applying for more than 40 jobs in the region, he has not had a single response. "I'm absolutely distraught," he says. "I don't want to leave my family and work over there but it's my best bet right now. I'm going for jobs paying £15,000 less than I was earning, but still getting nowhere."
