Views expressed on the New Zealand experience of deregulation (12 March, page 44) are somewhat over-simplified. The Building Regulations in the UK and Europe have grown disproportionately, and have caused a lot of red tape and avoidable expense.rnThe underlying problem is the nanny state mentality of the government. If we look at Victorian buildings, built at the time of little or no regulation, these have served the nation well for a century.
