WHAT IS ITER

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, or ITER as it is now known, was born out of the Glasnost era when Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev and US president Ronald Reagan agreed to collaborate on the development of nuclear fusion. The project is a collaboration between six countries - China, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and th< US - and the EU. The idea is that these countries contribute to the costs of ITER and jointly benefit from the knowledge.
