Norman Foster and Boris Johnson have hit out at the Airports Commission, after it ditched plans for an airport in the Thames Estuary in favour of what Foster branded the "sadly predictable compromise" of expanding Heathrow or Gatwick airports. On Tuesday the government-backed Davies Commission, which is investigating how to expand UK airport capacity, rejected proposals for a new airport built in the Thames Estuary, including those drawn up by Foster + Partners and mayor of London Boris Johnson. The decision leaves a two-horse race between building a third runway at Heathrow and a second runway at Gatwick. Commission chairman Howard Davies concluded the Thames Estuary proposal on the Isle of Grain had "substantial disadvantages that collectively outweigh its potential benefits" after conducting a "detailed further study into its feasibility".
