Civil and Marine founder gives £40m for Imperial campus

The founder of cement supplier Civil and Marine has donated £40m to Imperial College London to fund the construction of a biomedical engineering building at its planned 25-acre Imperial West campus in White City, west London. Michael Uren, a 1943 graduate of Imperial in mechanical engineering, has already helped fund the construction of a number of Imperial buildings and the gift follows other donations in the fields of medical research, education, the armed forces and conservation of wildlife. The centre will house research into affordable medical technology, helping people affected by a variety of medical conditions. The building will be known as the Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Hub. Uren said: "Imperial was inspirational when I first joined it as a young engineering student in 1940, when London was under attack every night, and it is inspirational today. May it continue to be so forever."
