Thomas Lane's piece on cladding for the private rental sector (24 January 2014, page 50) was a great article and a really interesting and useful insight into the way clients view the procurement of cladding. But, considering some of the issues raised, perhaps the UK cladding industry might be worth a second look? It is true that there are few successful UK-based cladding specialists that can compete on both a technical and project size level with their European counterparts. Also true is the fact that the economic climate has led to the demise of many cladding specialists which has contributed to the perception that the UK market has never been able to develop the technical skills and experience required. But look closer and you will see that there are UK based contractors out there who, like Lakesmere, do have the experience and specialist skills to be able offer a viable alternative to sourcing cladding and facade contractors in Europe.
