Armitt calls for 20-year skills plan

Sir John Armitt has called on the construction industry and government to develop a 20-year plan to tackle the sector's chronic skills shortages, in a debate hosted by Building at the Ecobuild conference. Armitt, author of a Labour-commissioned review of infrastructure policy and chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, said the UK should learn from European neighbour Germany on the importance of technical skills. He also lamented the fact that 80% of people working in the construction industry are qualified to NVQ2 or less.
