HS2 has shortlisted nine heavyweight bidders for up to £12bn worth of enabling works, writes Iain Withers. The shortlist includes eight joint ventures - featuring the likes of Balfour Beatty, Sir Robert McAlpine and Carillion - and a lone bid by Bechtel (see box). The news comes after HS2 last week confirmed that a CH2M/ Atkins/Sener joint venture had been chosen as the £350m engineering delivery partner for the £21.4bn first phase of the scheme. The first phase covers the 140 miles from London to Birmingham. The civil engineering contracts are expected to be signed in 2017, with the start of work on site one year later.
