Tower absent from new Edinburgh galleria plan

Allan Murray Architects and BDP have submitted their masterplan for the redevelopment of the 1970s St James Shopping Centre to Edinburgh City Council.rnWhile earlier designs for the project, for Henderson Global Investors, included a tall building, the submitted scheme has no new development taller than the site's existing roofline.rnThe scheme was one of those referred to by Unesco director-general Koichiro Matsuura last month when he called for a halt tornEdinburgh's major developments during an investigation into the city's world heritage status.rnHowever, it is understood that although there is no tall building in the current application, the possibility of including a tower has not been ruled out. The application is for 93,000sq m of retail on a crescent-shaped galleria, two new hotels, 250 flats, 15,000sq m of office space, plus underground parking and public spaces.rnThe project is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
