Estate in its infancy

Taken straight after the Robin Hood Gardens estate was completed, this photograph shows not only how large the site is - partly a result of the widening of the Blackwell Tunnel - but also how difficult. Ostensibly one large traffic island, it is bounded by East London Dock Road to the north (in the picture), Aspen Way to the south and is adjacent to the Blackwell Tunnel entrance. This made noise reduction essential, and the Smithsons were asked to design for no more than 50 dBA during daylight hours and 35 dBA at night.
