Listing bid threatens Waterloo ambitions

Plans by Network Rail to radically redevelop Britain's largest railway station have been challenged by an English Heritage attempt to list it. Network Rail - which controls the country's railway tracks and 18 key stations including the lOha Waterloo complex - is considering removing the station's roof, lengthening platforms and lowering the entire concourse to the level of Nicholas Grimshaw's former Eurostar terminal to increase capacity and improve access. But English Heritage has responded with an attempt to list the entire complex at grade II, including Grimshaw's award-winning 1993 terminal, according to official correspondence obtained by Save Britain's Heritage. At present, only the station's victory arch is listed, at grade II. In its advice to the DCMS, English Heritage described the mainline station as the "largest and finest British terminus of the early 20 th century".
