Painter Bridget Riley, known for her optical illusions, was interviewed in BD in 1984 when an exhibition of her decorative work at the Royal Liverpool Hospital opened at the RIBA. At the time, the hospital had a serious problem with graffiti, and had asked several artists to come up with ideas to decorate it more thoughtfully.rnRiley drew her ideas from Egyptian tomb paintings that she'd seen on holiday.rn"In Liverpool I rediscovered a very old principle of decoration: to articulate thernbones of architecture into a flowing environment," Riley told interviewer Douglas Stephen, pictured here with the artist at her studio. Riley's walls were painted by Graham Henderson and hand-printed using a silk screen onto vinyl, giving a silky finish that hung Like wallpaper. "Through silk-screening one can get beautiful saturated colours," she said.
