Riverside fails to tell the heroic story of Glasgow

Ten years ago I produced the mas-terplan for Glasgow's transport Museum. I presented three options to the leader of the council: a developer's box turned into a cultural anchor as part of the redevelopment deal; an original 19th century shipbuilding shed reconstructed on the site; or an icon building. It was obvious in minutes that the leader wanted an icon. I gave him the costs of all three (spot on with inflation!) and warned him that £60 million later there would be little money left to tell the Glasgow story if he went down the icon route.
