The sparse materials and natural light create a spirit of social openness

I first saw the Erco building in the late 1980s on a road trip through Germany, not long after it had been finished. It has been at the back of my mind ever since, coming to the foreground again recently when Haworth Tompkins designed the Dyson Building for the Royal College of Art. I wanted to choose a building for Inspiration that was a touchstone for the Dyson Building. We saw that building as a place of production-an art factory. James Dyson's involvement and his campaign for more investment in innovation made me reflect on the value of buildings that provide thoughtful support for the creative work of others. Erco's Technical Centre is proof positive of the success of this approach.
