The latest RIBA report, City Health Check, demonstrating the links between environments inviting outdoor activity and health, is all well and good ("Better planning could save lives and £1 billion a year, says RIBA" bdonline February 3). But there is a glaring omission, which is that the greatest deterrent to exercising outdoors, whether on foot or on bike, is grossly unequal competition for urban space with motor vehicles. Their noise, pollution and danger cause parents who might otherwise encourage their children to bike to school (forming the habit of a lifetime) instead to join the traffic jams and encourage the passive acceptance of car-dependency.
