Glass at work

A California university recently undertook a major upgrade of an iconic football stadium, which was built in the 1920s and needed seismic improvements as well as greater user appeal. Architecture and engineering firm HNTB helmed the project, which retained the Romanesque fagade and spectator bowl but was otherwise extensively redesigned. Vetrotech Saint-Gobain supplied fire-rated glass for 19 interior walls, combining the VDS curtain wall product with Contraflam 60 glazing and VDS Lite doors with Pyroswiss 20 IGUs. The solution provides a nearly seamless transition between doors and adjacent fixed panels for an open look and optimal daylighting. The finished stadium also includes one-hour fire-rated glass elevator lobby enclosures-which replaced concrete enclosures-and a new two-story, glass-fronted press box.
