It's an increasingly pertinent issue, as Building Teams and their clients shoot for ever-more-ambitious levels of sustainability. Creating a high-performance building is one thing; doing it by reconstructing a Beaux Arts courthouse or midcentury Modern tower is entirely another. As client goals approach net-zero energy, or even net-positive, the aesthetic decisions get harder. You might manage LEED Platinum or three Green Globes with infrastructure upgrades that don't show, but going further often requires more extreme measures. Hitting the mark is likely to involve a reworked fagade, a significant amount of rooftop PV, or both.
