This hospital conversion project is the latest addition to the Knowledge Is Power Program's (KIPP) national network of 162 public charter schools. The highly successful program-87% of its middle school graduates go on to earn a college degree-has been educating children in underserved communities since 1995. This project involved transforming the abandoned and foreclosed Sharpstown General Hospital into a PK-12 flagship school. While the property was ideal for school use-the 3.5-acre site borders a church playfield-the structure itself was a mess. Complete and accurate documents did not exist. Shortly after construction commenced, the team discovered a host of problems: columns were not connected to beams, and failing concrete slabs had inadequate reinforcement.
