In addition to offering various on-demand services from headend servers, cable operators are also deploying an increasing number of set-top boxes equipped with digital video recorder (DVR) technology that gives viewers the ability to timeshift content and pause, rewind or fast forward during a live program. Most operators who are leasing DVR-equipped set-tops to subscribers are motivated by a competitive desire to match the DVR [also known as personal video recorder or PVR] offerings from their satellite competitors, though some industry players predict that DVRs will evolve in the future into home servers that MSOs will intentionally push content to and that subscribers will use to store non-video content.
