One of television's most celebrated show-runners, Marc Cherry, never met Brandon Tartikoff. But the mastermind of ABC's instant smash hit Desperate Housewives credits the late NBC programming genius with shaping his career and inspiring him, years later, to create a show with a cast of strong, unforgettable women. "The thing that put me on the map in this town was writing for The Golden Girls," says Cherry. "In fact, my first spec script [written as a sample to show agents and producers what he was capable of] was a Golden Girls script. It was my favorite show. Tartikoff [who developed The Golden Girls] had created a show that spoke to me so personally that my writing partner and I wrote a script and eventually got hired off of that script to write for the actual show."
