In January 1 785 - two years after the Revolutionary War ended and four years before George Washington's first inauguration - the Georgia legislature adopted the charter that created the University of Georgia. In founding the nation's first state university, the legislature also gave birth to the American system of public higher education. Over the past 227 years, Georgia and its flagship university have grown together as partners in a burgeoning prosperity that has made the state an economic showplace and the University of Georgia a fast track contender for educational preeminence. With nearly 35,000 students and an annual budget that exceeds $1 billion, the University is a driving force in the state's dynamic development.
