The paley center for media on Oct. 29 hosted the CEOs of three independent programmers - Scripps Networks' Ken Lowe, AMC Networks' Josh Sapan and Discovery Communications' David Zaslav - to discuss content. Mark Robichaux, B&C and Multichannel News editorial director, moderated. Zaslav conceded that content owners had acted hastily in making deals with SVOD players. "If a cable operator adds a million subs, we get paid every month forever. So why did we give our content for nothing, super a la carte, to Apple and Samsung and Vodaphone? And why did we [go along] when Reed [Hastings, CEO of Netflix], who's brilliant and created a fantastic platform, said to us, 'Here's how it's going to work: No commercials, no brands.
