After losing her job at Comcast in 2006, Susanne McAvoy found herself at a crossroads. She had risen through the marketing ranks at Turner, MTV and Oxygen, accomplishing plenty along the way, but had not stepped back to assess what her ideal work environment was. "Nobody ever stopped and said, 'Hey, what do you want to do?'" she recalled. "It was kind of the first time in my career I was very reflective." Two traits stood out. As fate would have it, an opportunity at Crown Media's Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel came along. While she still had some other strong job leads, "I went in head-first, praying that I would get hired" at Hallmark, McAvoy said.
