With the goal of realizing a recording device for the Super Hi-Vision (SHV) system, advances are being made at the Science & Technology Research Laboratories on the research and development of holographic recording technology. Recording SHV video data requires a recording capacity 1,000 times higher, and a data transfer speed 100 times faster, than the current DVD format. It is anticipated that holographic recording technology will provide a removable medium that will allow such a massive amount of data to be recorded and reproduced.
