Broadcast Technology Evolution: Aiming for New Lifestyles

The NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) is marking the eightieth anniversary of its foundation. Over the years, STRL has been a leader in developing and advancing broadcasting technologies, and its achievements have been instrumental in the advent of television broadcasting, Hi-Vision (HDTV), satellite broadcasting, and digital broadcasting. At present, our researchers are working to create new broadcasting services that will support the lifestyles of people five years, ten years, and twenty years hence. STRL' s role as part of the public broadcaster NHK is to show our viewers a new world of broadcasting. The "3-screens" service that we are developing will serve viewers' needs in the near future, while our work on Super Hi-Vision (SHV) and integral three-dimensional television is meant to anticipate their future expectations and to fulfill their long-held dreams.
