Media Accessibility in the US, Innovations for Today and Tomorrow

This presentation reviewed the history of media access in the US and the technical, regulatory policy, and marketplace catalysts that have resulted in many advances, focusing on the research and development phase. Captioning (and, in some cases, video description) is now available on digital television, mobile DTV, the Web, DVDs and Blu-ray disks, smart phones, and in movie theaters. Demonstrations or illustrations of each of these innovations were presented. The presenter discussed his view of what's next for WGBH's National Center for Accessible Media and the world of media access. This included a discussion of the use of synthesized speech and automatic speech recognition, crowd-sourced production, and cloudbased enhancement of media via automated and semi-automated processes.
