Video streaming systems for PCs and smartphones are shifting from a dedicated video streaming server scheme to ones used for ordinary web content. One example of this is MPEG-DASH. While different video applications have been used for viewing video by device types, the standardization of HTML5's video viewing extension functionalities have been preparing an environment where video can be viewed using an ordinary web browser without the need for any dedicated software. Against this background, the Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) has developed a web browser-based MPEG-DASH viewing control function that is compatible with HTML5-compliant TV receivers (Figure 1). This will make it feasible to create cross-device, universal video-viewing players.
