In recent years, flat-panel displays have increased both in size and resolution. However, given that the natural human visual system changes both quantitatively and qualitatively when traveling from the center of the visual field to the periphery, the human viewing experience may also change as a retinal image grows larger. Since incorporating these insights into video productions may be useful for creating better programs, this study quantitatively measured viewer preferences for ultra-high-definition (UHDTV) image viewing angles using psychophysical methods, and examined which factors influence these preferences. The preferred viewing angle was measured by displaying numerous high-resolution videos on an 85-inch 8K. display. For our tests, the viewers were seated at viewing distances of 0.75 and 1.5 times the screen height, and the videos were zoomed in from 100% to 25% at seven levels. The results revealed that the preferred viewing angle depended on the patterns in the video, with viewers preferring wider angles for landscapes and narrower angles for objects and people. These trends held regardless of viewing distance. Furthermore, at double the viewing distance, the preferred viewing angle increased by about 10% of the screen size. These results suggest that accounting for the viewer's viewing distance could help in producing more pleasing images.
