At STRL, we have been working to develop single-chip color image sensor based on organic photoconductive films*1 (or simply organic films) for use in compact color cameras capable of producing high-quality images. Organic films, which consist of thin layers of organic materials in which carbon forms the structural backbone, have the feature of absorbing (and converting to electrical signals) only certain specific wavelengths of light, allowing transmission of all other wavelengths. In this work, we have developed an organic image sensor with a three-layer structure consisting of two types of organic films stacked on a CMOS image sensor (CIS), which we have successfully used to acquire color images.
