One feature of the 4KV8K satellite broadcasting that was launched on December 1, 2018 is high dynamic range (HDR). HDR represents a wider range of brightness than is possible with the standard dynamic range (SDR) of current HDTV broadcasting. This enables a higher reproduction fidelity of scenes in which the difference in brightness between shaded and sunlit areas is large and bright light reflected from glass or metal exists. However, because the range of the reproduced brightness is different between HDR and SDR, when an HDR program is broadcast in SDR HDTV without any conversion, the reproduced program results in a dark video. To address this issue, STRL is researching techniques for converting HDR video to natural SDR video.
