Virtual reality (VR) is technology whereby a computer generates images of a virtual environment that follow the viewer's movements to make it seem as if the viewer is really in this environment. Modern VR technology requires the viewer to wear a head-mounted display (HMD) equipped with miniature display devices and sensors to detect the orientation of the viewer's head. By extracting and displaying the corresponding section of an omnidirectional (360°) image of the entire virtual environment surrounding the viewer, it is possible to give the viewer the impression that he or she is actually in this virtual environment. However, this technology is not fully immersive because the display devices incorporated into HMDs do not have high resolution. As a result, the images displayed to the viewer can appear pix-elated.
