NHK established its Corporate Plan for FY2018 -2020 with the goal of delivering the highest level of broadcasting and services by 2020. In this plan, NHK resolved to pursue the realization of "public value" by using the internet to deliver accurate, timely news and a variety of high-quality programs to as many people as possible while keeping broadcasting as its mainstay. To achieve this goal and fulfill its role in leading research and development with regard to state-of-the-art broadcast technologies and services, NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) drew up the NHK STRL R&D Plan for FY2018-2020 with goals for 2020, and even beyond that, for 2030 to 2040. Marking these three years as a phase for creating new broadcast technologies and services, STRL aims to engage in R&D to make richer broadcast services possible in three main themes: reality imaging, connected media, and smart production.
