Like interactive television be- fore it, the prospects for sending secondary data within a station's digital bitstream, or datacasting, were hyped for years as a viable business model that would allow broadcasters to make DTV transmissions as financially successful as their NTSC channel. Unfortunately, like ITV, several factors have led to a series of failed business ventures and wasted resources, namely getting the 8-VSB modulation scheme to work, building out the DTV infrastructure to meet FCC mandates and competition from outside the industry.
