The largest scale arch bridge of its structural type in Eastern Japan, Kesennuma Oshima Bridge is a 356-m long half-through-type steel arch bridge that links the 2,600 inhabitants of Oshima Island to the Sannohama district of the city of Kesennuma. As a bridge connecting the islands and mainland areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, its construction is a symbol of reconstruction, and through deliberations held under the Oshima Bridge Design Review Committee, matters concerning disaster prevention, operation and maintenance, and inspection in regard to earthquakes have been considered in the design of the bridge.
