ANGULAR APPROACH

At 3am on the last day of August, four lanes of traffic heading northbound on Hamilton Avenue in New York City flowed freely across the Gowanus Canal. Construction of the new span had been carried out during a traffic closure of only 63 days, during which the existing bridge was demolished and a new span built. The replacement of a relatively small urban arterial bridge in such a short time period may not seem so remarkable but this was neither a typical bridge nor a simple project.
