An equipment failure is believed to have caused the collapse of a launching gantry being used for construction of the Delhi Metro, which killed two people and injured 12. The accident happened on 19 October in the Lakshmi Nagar area in the east of the city, on the elevated metro extension to Vaishali. The viaduct is being built by segmental construction using an overhead gantry to lift segments into position before post-tensioning is carried out on the whole span. One of the gantry's lifting points failed while a segment was being lifted, causing the segment to swing down and overbalance the gantry, which collapsed onto vehicles passing below.
