The purpose-built V Simulators facility at Exeter Science Park features virtual-reality technology that aims to link structural movement and environmental conditions with human perception, psychology and physiology. The fully controllable virtual environment was conceived to answer a seemingly simple question: how do people react to the built environment? The simulator uses a motion platform to recreate the subtle motion of structures such as pedestrian bridges, high-rise office floors or crowded stadia, while nine head-mounted displays enable users to perceive the motion as they move around in a virtual world. Optical and inertial motion-capture systems record the human interactions, while forces are also recorded by an array of force plates mounted on the motion platform.
