HIGH-SPEED RAIL LINK HITS MILESTONE WITH FIRST OF THREE ARCHES

The first of three arch structures has been installed on the Naples-Cancello section of a high-speed rail link in Italy that will run between the city of Naples on the west coast and Bari on the east coast.The bridge, designed by Italferr, was installed by Webuild during a ten-hour operation at the end of March using 18 special trailers that distributed the weight along 104 wheeled axes. The bridge was then hoisted about 6m above ground with strand jacks. Like the other two crossings, which will be installed in the coming months, the bridge is roughly 80m long, 21m high and 2,500t heavy.The Naples-Bari line aims to become a strategic link for the development of sustainable mobility in the region, halving the travel time between the two cities to two hours. It is also expected to enhance connectivity between north and south Italy, cutting travel time between Milan and Bari to six hours.Webuild is constructing the Naples-Cancello and Apice-Hirpinia sections, which are 15.5km and 18km long respectively. Some 600 people are working on the projects currently, with this set to increase to 930 by 2022.
