Cyber scammers worldwide are likely feeling encouraged by the ease with which one of their own has conned a small town in Boulder County, USA out of more than US$1 million intended for the construction firm behind a new bridge. The town of Erie held a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new pedestrian crossing on 4 November, when the US$5.1-million bridge was hailed as an 'iconic landmark'. Celebrations quickly soured, however, when a call from the bank the next day revealed that the true cost of the new structure could be somewhat closer to US$6.2 million.
