In subtitling its report on Assisted Suicide, ‘How the chatteringnclasses have got it wrong’, and condemning ‘the strident con-nsumerist e ´ lite which is playing on fears of death and dying toncall for the legislation of assisted suicide’, the Centre for PolicynStudies (10 October 2010) invites a backlash from those whonsupport a change in legislation on assisted dying; and caricaturenof opinion expressed by its author, the Catholic writer CristinanOdone, as merely rehearsing the preconceived views of a religiousnminority. In turn, the secular majority that has thought carefullynabout the matter may bristle at the assertion that ‘most opponentsnof assisted dying are in a minority driven by faith’ ([Lord] JoelnJoffe: The Times, 16 December 2009), finding this as superficialnan analysis of the situation as it is untrue.
