Purpose - This article's purpose is to show the "why" and "how" of making well thought-out procedures. Design/methodology/approach - The article introduces the training need for good procedures, further defines them, and then describes how to think about them in order to produce a useful set of them. Findings - The findings are that good procedures are useful to, and necessary for, a well-run library. Practical implications - Libraries need to have, and consistently follow, good procedures in order to function efficiently. Social implications - Libraries will only survive as long as they are offering good service for a reasonable cost, the end goal of good procedures. Originality/value - The value of the article is in learning how to come up with good procedures as a basic tool that will help library staff to perform their duties as efficiently as possible.
