Lev Kisselev in memoriam

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Professor Lev Kisselev on Saturday 12 April in Moscow, as the result of a serious illness, at the age of 71. Lev L'vovich Kisselev graduated in biochemistry from Moscow State University in 1959 and obtained his Ph.D. from the Bakh Institute of Biochemistry, Moscow, in 1963. From 1976 he was a Research Director at the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology, Moscow. Lev Kisselev was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1990, and occupied several important functions, such as Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Russian program "Human Genome", and Chairman of the Scientific Council of the section of Molecular Biology and Genetics. He developed close connections with French science, and was a regular visitor to France, occupying short-term positions at the Institut Jacques Monod in Paris, the Institut de Biologie Moleculaire et Cellulaire in Starsbourg (1974-1975), Universite Paris 7 (1992-1993), the College de France, Paris (1993), the Universite de Rennes (1995), and at the Institut Curie, Paris, as recipient of an International Blaise Pascale Chair for Research (1997-1998). He did much to encourage contact and collaboration between Russian and French scientists, and participated regularly in the organisation of Franco-Russian meetings. Lev Kisselev was a Russian Editor of "Biochimie" throughout a decade, until 2007.
